We started our session with  breathing exercise and chanting Om 3 times. We recited Sree Ganapathi Stotram and completed learning Sree Govinda Damodara Storam . You can listen to the song we recorded in class at this link Damodara Stotram recorded in class.  We revised the qualities of Krishna we learnt in the last class. Some of the kids were concerned about the unfortunate  incident in Connecticut school . As the incident  is very sensitive we  didn't wanted to discuss it in the class but we maintained silence for 2 mins in the memory of the diseased.
In the Krishna Lila story time,we talked about Raslila. How all the inmates of Vrindavan were enchanted with Krishna's basuri/flute.. How all the gopis left their chores to see Krishna playing his flute, how they all danced together and in the process became possessive of Krishna and to teach them lesson how he disappeared and reappeared after they realized their mistake. We also discussed what the 7 holes of the flute represent..
We recited the first 9 verses of Geeta and also learnt the 10th verse. Please encourage kids to practice Gita chanting at home. Class Review- 4 Grade Section B - 12/09/2012 - Class Room # A108

HARI OM EVERY ONE!

We started our session with  breathing exercise and chanting Om 3 times. We recited Sree Ganapathi Stotram and learnt Sree Govinda Damodara Storam - first 4 verses . We talked about last week's homework and what kind of service kids had performed over the week. There were lot of questions about difference between service, help and duty. That brought us into the discussion of Karma. How one should perform their duty with out expecting any favors.. What happens when one performs their Karma and Karma Phala..

This discussion lead us to the Krishna Lila's story time..and we had a perfect story of  "Egoistic Indra and Krishna The Govardhan Giridhar"... People in Gokul didn't perform yagna to please Indra as Krishna convinced them that Indra is just performing his duties and he doesn't need to be pleased to do his duties..Egoistic Indra becomes offended and drowns Vrindavan with storms. Krishna rescues  people of Vrindavan by lifting the mount Govardhan. All the people and cattle of Vrindavan took shelter under mount Govardhan for 7 days. None of Indra's wicked actions affected them. They were happily enjoying the company of Krishna .. This made Indra realize his mistake. He figured out that the blue boy was no other than lord Vishnu and comes down to apologize.

We practiced Geeta chanting -- recited the first 9 verses. Please encourage kids to practice Gita chanting at home. Kids did Likhita japa in their books before they continued on their fun project, which was started two weeks back. Kids wrote the virtues of Krishna that they learnt so far on each finger of their palm cut out. They could decorate the palm in coming sessions and also at home.

PS- Please make sure to remind your kids to file the hard copies of bhajan's provided in class.

See you all in our next Balavihar session on Dec 16th  2012.

Class Review (Section 1) 12/09/2012

Hari Om,
We had some interesting discussions in class today. Some of the questions were about mortality and immortality, about many Gods, Supreme God, concept of becoming one with God, does that mean we enter God's body? It was like a tap had been opened in the class and water of questions flowed out from almost every child.

We started the class in the usual manner with likitha japa and opening prayers. We then moved to the Govinda Damodra stotram. We are learning verses 11 and 12 in geeta. We are happy to note that some of the children have memorized upto verse 4.

During Krishna Story time we went over the divine vision offered to Akrura when he offered mid afternoon prayers in the shores of the Mandakini river . We went over the miracles Krishna performed in Mathura. Kamsa ' s bad dreams and night mares.

The next day  Krishna and Balarama arrived at the stadium for the wrestling contest. Krishna kills the  elephant KuvalAyapida who is at entrance waiting to stamp the brothers. We ended the chapter with Krishna killing Kamsa. Ugrasena is reinstated as the king. Vasudeva and Devaki meet their son.

We hope to quiz the children next week. Please help them prepare.
Thanks

Class Review (Section 1) 12/2/2012

Hari Om,
We had a nearly full class after the long Thanksgiving break. We started with the usual 3 loud oms and the     n continued with Achutham Kesavam bhajan. Was thrilling to hear all the children sing this melodious song. We then continued learning the Govinda Damodra strotam. We are now learning verses 3 and 4.

Next came the toughest part of the class. Many children enjoy it but quite a few fear this part of the class. Parents, please help your children with the geeta chapter 13. We have many tools available. Please avail of the link http://www.geetachanting.net

We moved on to the story time. We told the story of salvation of Sudarshan. Following Krishna's twelth  Nand Baba wanted to perform puja for Ambika devi. Nanda and all other Gopas drove their carts with families and reached Ambikavana on a pilgrimage tour. There they took bath in the river Saraswati and with devotion worshiped lord Lord Shiva and Parvati. They also observed day long fast and decided to pass their night on the bank of Saraswati. But that place was inhabited by a huge python. During the night: the python emerged and catches hold of Nand's leg. Nandbaba cried loudly. He cried again: "Kanhaiya, This snake is all set to strangulate me. Save me." Lord touched the python with his feet and instantly, the python vanished. In its place appeared a divine-looking human. He said: "O Lord, I was a Vidyadhar named Sudarshan. I was so much obsessed with my beauty, youth, luxury and comforts that I used to insult others. One day I had derided at the ugly appearance of the sage Angira. So indignantly he cursed me to become a python. But, pleased by my realization of mistake, he had told that when God himself would touch me, I would regain my original appearance." Thereafter, Sudarshan went round the God, worshiped Him and with his permission, departed to his abode.

On another occasion a demon Shankhchur tried to escape away kidnapping some of the Gopis. A stampede resulted among Gopis. Hearing their noise, Krishna ran after the demon. In no time He overtook the demon and killed him by just one blow. He picked up the gem from demon's head and handed it to Balarama.

We then moved on to Akrura story. After Narada muni visits Kamsa and reveals Krishna's whereabouts, Kansa is enraged. He decides to hold a Dhanuryagna and invite the special inhabitants of Vrindavan. He sends Akrura a popular yadava as messenger. Akrura warns Kamsa that all well made plans can go awry.
Akrura is eager to see the lord. He is warmly welcomed in Vrindavan. The Nanda and Krishna welcome this invitation from Kamsa. Plans are made to set out the following day.
When Krishna leaves Vrindavan, he leaves behind the gopis and his mother Yashoda maiya. The simple folks are dejected to Krishna leave their village. But with exemplary devotion, they all attain the lord's side.

We had closing prayers in the auditorium, We may be having a quiz next week. See you all next week.

Class Review- 4 Grade Section B - 12/02/2012 - Class Room # A108

HARI OM EVERY ONE!

We started our session with  breathing exercise and chanting Om 3 times. We recited Sree Ganapathi Stotram

We learnt Sree Govinda Damodara Storam - first 2 verses . Kids enjoyed learning this well known bhajan.

We moved on to Krishna Lila's story time.. The devotion of the noble  Rishi patni's .. how they left the Yagna and went to serve Krishna and provided food for hungry gopas. At this context we discussed the importance of trees and brainstormed on why they are noble, how we all can serve others in need.. Next week's home work is to think of any noble actions of service that kids have performed and write a 2 liner on that.

We heard the wonderful story of King Sibi -- who was well known for his kindness and service. How he rescued the hurt pigeon and offered himself in tun to the eagle who was indeed the Kind of Devas, "The Indra". Fire God"Agni" and Indra were testing Sibi and nature to serve all beings equally.

We practiced Geeta chanting -- recited the first 7 verses. Please encourage kids to practice Gita chanting at home. Kids did Likhita japa in their books before they continued on their fun project, which was started in last class. All the kids had cut the traced out palms on the poster boards. We are going to work more on this project and also conclude it  in our next class.

PS- Please make sure to remind your kids to file the hard copies of bhajan's provided in class.

Class review (Section 1) 11/18/2012 and 11/11/2012

Hari Om,
We apologize for not updating the blog for last 2 classes. This is the update for class of 11/11/2012 and 11/18/2012. As usual we started with likitha japa. The likitha japa notebooks will be placed under the idols and in the foundation of the new temple. So please take care of these notebooks.

The children finished learning the achutham kesavam bhajan. We started the Govinda Damodra Stotram.

Please have the children practice their geeta chanting at home. They can use the geetha chanting online tool.
We have finished up to verse 7 in our class. We are very proud that some of the children have memorized a few verses.

In the Krishna lila we told the children how Krishna destroyed Indra's ego by lifting the Govardhana hill and protecting the inhabitants of Vrindavan. We went over the Nishkam Karma, or self-less or desireless action is an action performed without any expectation of fruits or results. The opposite is Sakam Karma (Attached Involvement) or actions done with results in mind. We discussed the Karma phalam or the fruits of our actions.

The following week we continued with the Ras Lila of Krishna. The gopis are drawn by the melodies music of  Krishna. They abandon their work and family. Krishna chides them playfully, but rewards their devotion with a night of music and dancing. We discussed how we are all instruments for Bhagwan, We play his music when he breathes life into us.

We also discussed the following prayer. We ended the class after we tried out a few dandia steps. Hope to see you all in class December 1st.

Lord, make me an instrument of your peace.
Where there is hatred, let me sow love.
Where there is injury, pardon.
Where there is doubt, faith.
Where there is despair, hope.
Where there is darkness, light.
Where there is sadness, joy.
O Divine Master,
grant that I may not so much seek to be consoled, as to console;
to be understood, as to understand;
to be loved, as to love.
For it is in giving that we receive.
It is in pardoning that we are pardoned,
and it is in dying that we are born to Eternal Life.

Class Review- 4 Grade Section B - 11/18/2012 - Class Room # A108

HARI OM EVERY ONE!

We started our session with  breathing exercise and chanting Om 3 times. We recited Sree Ganapathi Stotram Click here for the text and audio version. If your child has lost the copy that was provided in the class, please take a copy from this link and give to your child. We noticed that couple of kids are missing the sheets and had to share with their friends.
We practiced Geeta chanting -- recited the first 5 verses. This weeks home work is to practice the Geeta verses and be prepared to the next class with the binder, notebook, pencils and crayons.
In our story time we moved on to the most  interesting Krishna Lila's  of  Kaliya Mardhanam-  The poisonous serpent Kaliya lived in lake Madu and contaminated the whole lake. All the birds and other living things in that area died because of the poisonous fumes in that area. Some gopas unknowingly went to that lake and died. Krishna jumped into the lake .. all the gopas worried and called NandBaba and Yashoda. Krishna grew large and jumped on top of the egoistic Kaliya and danced merrily. Exhausted Kaliya and his wives prayed Krishna to pardon their mistakes. Forgiving Krishna asked them to leave that place and move to an island far away.
We discussed about Kaliya -- how every one has a taint of Kaliya in them .. difference between consciousness and egoism .. how we all can fight the Kaliya in ourselves by being good  and helpful to others.
We started a fun project , as a first step we just traced out palm on the poster board and in coming classes we are going to work more on that.
Kids also did Likhita japa . Please encourage your child to write "Sri Krishna Saranam Mama" . We are planning to put the likhita japa books under the deities of our Vrindavan Ashram.

See you all in our next Balavihar session on Dec 1st 2012. Happy Thanks giving!

Class Review- 4 Grade Section B - 11/11/2012 - Class Room # A108

HARI OM EVERY ONE!

Hope you and your families are safe and sound after the hurricane sandy hit our state. We were all delighted to meet after a long break. We started our class with breathing exercises, chanting Om 3 times and morning prayers.    We discussed about hurricane Sandy .. how hurricanes are caused, effects , safety rules, etc. We reviewed last week's home work. Please do remind your children to do their home work. We are giving simple home work which should not take more than 10 mins . As we are learning about Krishna and his virtues, most of the home work will be geared towards the virtues of Krishna like, forgiveness, kindness, sharing etc. So it shouldn't be too hard for kids to do.  Doing home work helps kids to remember what was taught so please ask them what was taught in the class and if they have any home work.

We recited Sree Ganapathi stotram. Most of the kids got the hang of reciting the stotram and we are going to continue practicing this in every session. Click here for the text and audio version.

In our story time we moved on to other interesting Krishna Lila's  of Aghasura Death --Agha the Python laid in the path of gopas to kill Krishna. Gopas unknowingly walked into his mouth and Krishna made Aghasura choke and die by growing big in his mouth .

We also learnt about Brahmaji's maha Bhanga-- Brahmaji tries to trick Krishna and took all gopas and cows away into a cave. Krishna with his Maya created look - a -likes of Gopas and cows and took them home to Vrindavan. No one including parents of gopas realized this maya.  Ashamed Brahmaji apologized to Sri Krishna and released the gopas , cows.  We talked about the humility and humbleness of Krishna for not showing off but making Brahmaji realize his mistake. This weeks's home work is to write a sentence about how you or some one you know are humble or showed humility.

We also heard about the tale of silly turtle which lost it's life by trying to show off when his friends "the two cranes" were carrying him to a pond.

We went over the great qualities of Krishna which made darling of all and discussed how we can be nice to others and be every one's darling. This week's home work is to write a sentence about "Why you are loved by others".

The last story of this session was the death of Dhenukasura  - the asura in the form of donkey, how Balarama and Krishna killed him when he harmed them when they tried to get tala-fruits. Thus Kansa's evil plans have failed again.

We ended our session with Aarthi and Pledge.

See you all in our next Balavihar session on 18th.

Class review (Section 1) 10/21/2012

hari Om,
Dashera weekend. We had a lot of our friends missing. Our next balavihar is at the Mercer Park. We will have the Cord Walkathon on October 28th at 10:00 am.

The children got settled in and started with likitha japa. 'Sri Krishnam Saranam Mama'. After we finished the morning prayers, we learnt one more stanza of Achutham Kesavam hymn. Aunty taught the children how to break up the complex sankrit words into simpler words, so it is easy to pronounce.

We learnt two more verses of the Geeta Chapter 13. Please visit http://www.geetachanting.net/ for the online audio and tools. The audio can be played line by line or verse by verse and the text can be viewed side by side in English.

We continued with the Krishna Lila. Krishna is growing up as a loving boy, the darling of all. We heard about the Dhenukasura vadham. Near the Vrindavan was a talavan forest where sweet tala fruit grew. The gopas wanted to offer these to Krishna and Balarama. But the forest was guarded by a herd of ferocious donkeys. The leader was an asura called Dhenuka. The donkeys had instructions from Kamsa to guard these fruits. We see the cowherd boys, they were not interested for themselves. They wanted to simply offer to Krishna and Balaram. That was their great happiness. But they could not offer them to Krishna and Balaram as long as Dhenukasura was there. This is our problem. Krishna says all the fruits of your works should be offered to Supreme God. But this ass demon in our heart constantly wants to lustfully enjoy everything we come in contact with we can not do it. Please remove the demons of selfishness, pride and jealousy from our hearts so that we can offer everything to you for your pleasure and in your pleasure we will enjoy the highest. Balarama went into the forest shook the trees. Hearing the fruit falling the demon attacked Balarama with his hind legs. But he was no match for Balarama.

We then heard the story of Kalia the snake who was poisoning the lake by river Yamuna. No fish could live in the contaminated water. The fumes from the poisoned water killed even birds flying overhead. Krishna leaped into the waters and fought the seperent. He wriggled out of the serpent's deathly hug and started dancing on the serpent head. The worried gopas and residents of Vrindavan were thrilled to see the heavenly   dance. When the wives of Kalia begged for mercy, Krishna forgave the serpent and his family but banished him to far off island.
We then ended our class with closing prayers and pledge

HariOm Every one!

We turned off lights in our class so that kids will settle down and also as an indication for kids who came in late to wait outside until the morning prayers are done. It's really important to bring your kids on time by 9.55AM. Thank you to parents and kids who helped me arrange the chairs. Your help is appreciated!

After our morning prayers, we recapped the Krishna story we learnt so far. Had a small pop quiz.We continued the story line and learnt how Krishna's birth was celebrated in Gokula, Kansa's evil plan to destroy his nephew failed.. Putana's futile attempt to poison baby Krishna, how forgiving Krishna was .. purified and gave moksha to Putana with his touch..Kansa's trickery..demise of asura trnavarta in Krishna's hands.

Class Review (Section 1), October 14th 2012

Hari Om,
Today was a glorious October day. Blessed are we to enjoy the day with your children. Once everyone got settled in we started the class with 3 loud oms, sahana vavathu. We then practiced the Sankashtnashna Ganesh sthothra.

We learned 2 more paras of the Achutham Kesavam. Please ask your child to sing it for you. The lilting melody had me singing the whole of last week. It is a beautiful song and we wish we could bring you in to class to hear the children sing it.

We started the first 2 verses of the geeta chapter 13
http://www.geetachanting.net/bvg13v01-10/ . It contains an excellent online learning tool, newly developed to make it easier to learn the right pronunciations of the verses. Do check it out and start your weekly practice right away.

Our Krishna Lila retelling continued and we covered the move from Gokulam to Vrindavan. The tatasura (calf), bakasura (crane), aghasura (snake) were destroyed by the child Krishna. Brahma ji tests Krishna by kidnapping the gopas and calf and hiding them in a cave. But Krishna succeeds in fooling Brahma ji.
Krishna multiplies himself and makes copies of boys and calves that looked exactly like the originals, and he then returned to the village with them. No one could tell the difference, but families showed increased spontaneous affection to their sons.
When Brahma ji returned he was shocked to see the boys and calves playing with Krishna, as though nothing had happened. Krishna knew Brahma was perplexed so He transformed all the boys and calves into four-armed Vishnu forms. Brahma heard music and saw many Brahmas, Shivas, demigods and jivas (souls) singing God's names and dancing. Brahma's mind opened at first to the vision, but then he became bewildered, so Krishna ended the dazzling scene. Brahma immediately got down from his swan-carrier and fell prostate at Krishna's feet to beg forgiveness.

The children homework is to 'Stop the Kali'
